Why Choose Closed Cell Foam Insulation?

Foam insulation is one of the most popular insulation varieties on the marketplace—and for good reason. On top of its high R-value (A.K.A. it’s strength as an insulator), it’s easy to apply, sound-dampening, and acts as an amazing barrier to air. Suffice it to say, spray foam insulation is one of the best insulators around, and almost anyone who’s had insulation work done knows about it. But that said, what if there were an even stronger variant of it?

Well as it turns out, there is a stronger version of spray foam: it’s called closed cell foam insulation. More and more people prefer this insulation each year, and with the right knowledge, it’s easy to see why.

In this month’s blog post, we’re discussing the many advantages of closed cell foam insulation.

Moisture Resistance

Though open cell spray foam is effective as an air barrier, it unfortunately doesn’t act as a moisture and vapor barrier. By contrast, closed cell foam insulation is completely moisture impermeable, meaning liquids simply can’t move through it.

Closed cell foam insulation achieves moisture resistance because—as the name implies—the cells are tightly packed together, so that physical materials simply can’t get past them. In other words, the cells are “closed” off.

Enhanced Durability

Because of the open nature of its cell structure, standard open cell insulation is a pliable material. After it’s applied, it can easily be bent, molded, or even torn off in chunks. While this can actually be a great benefit in some circumstances, it also means open cell insulation is more susceptible to damage.

On the opposite side of the coin, closed cell insulation is a shockingly durable material and can take a bit of a beating. For places where people or object may bump into the insulation, closed cell is almost certainly the right choice.

Higher R-Value

When it comes down to brass tacks, closed-cell insulation simply has a higher R-value than its open cell counterpart. Where open cell has an R-value of roughly 3.6 to 3.9 per inch, closed cell has roughly double: 6 to 7 per inch.

If your goal is to insulate your property well, then at the end of the day, closed cell insulation may be your strongest choice.
